The recently appointed Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator The Honourable Ruel Reid, met with the members of the National Council on Education on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at a luncheon meeting, co-ordinated by the NCE. The meeting was held at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel, immediately after the Council had convened a regular business meeting.  Also in attendance were, Minister of State, The Honourable Floyd Green, Permanent Secretary, Dr. Maurice Smith, Chief Education Officer, Dr. Grace McLean,  and Senior Advisor, Mrs. Sharon Hay-Webster. The Minister, in his presentation spoke about the Ministry’s general policy direction and initiatives, he also addressed the following concerns in response to the Council’s request:

  1. The impact of change in Ministerial Leadership on the NCE;
  2. The role of the Member of Parliament in the appointment process;
  3. Status of leased schools;
  4. Relocation of the NCE;
  5. Status of the revised Education Regulations, 1980.

He emphasized the importance of training school board members, in order to equip them with the necessary information, so that they can carry out their roles and responsibilities more effectively. He recommended that the Council develop a procedural framework to prevent a hiatus in the governance of public educational institutions when the tenure of their boards of management comes to an end. The NCE was pleased to have had the Honourable Minister address its members and wished for him every success as he serves his country in this new capacity.
